Altenar explains What 2026 Data Reveals About Youth Betting Trends in Africa

Young, Digital Audiences Drive Market Growth

Africa's betting market is being transformed by its rapidly growing youth population. With one of the youngest demographics in the world and rising smartphone and internet penetration, the majority of new bettors are between 18 and 35 years old. Surveys across countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa indicate that this generation is highly connected and is entering the betting market at an accelerating pace.

Football and Mobile Betting Lead Engagement

The report finds that football remains the dominant betting product, particularly major European leagues and international tournaments. Young bettors favor live and in-play wagering, placing frequent, low-value bets through mobile devices rather than making larger pre-match wagers. As a result, operators are increasingly focused on fast platforms, real-time markets and efficient payment systems capable of handling high betting volumes.

Promotions, Social Media and Retention Challenges

Research also shows that younger bettors are strongly influenced by promotional offers, peer recommendations and social media. While these factors help operators attract new customers, loyalty remains low, with users frequently switching platforms outside major sporting events. This makes customer retention and targeted CRM strategies more important than traditional loyalty programs.

Regulatory Pressure Expected to Increase

As youth participation continues to grow, regulators across Africa are paying closer attention to issues such as responsible gambling, advertising and sports sponsorships. The report concludes that operators entering or expanding in African markets should prioritize mobile-first products, responsible gambling measures and flexible acquisition strategies to adapt to a fast-growing but highly dynamic betting environment.
