Macau Casino Revenue Falls 1,2% in August

Gaming revenue remains in positive territory despite year-on-year decline

Macau’s casino industry recorded a slight decline in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in August, with revenue falling 1.2% year-on-year to MOP21.89 billion (approximately USD2.71 billion), according to figures released by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ).

Eight-month revenue continues to grow

Despite the annual decline, Macau’s casino market maintained overall growth during the first eight months of the year. Cumulative GGR reached MOP169.05 billion, up 3.7% compared with the same period in 2025.

On a monthly basis, August delivered a stronger performance than July, with revenue increasing 8.1% from MOP20.26 billion.

World Cup impact remains limited

The August results come after concerns that the FIFA World Cup, held in North America from June 11 to July 19, could have temporarily affected Macau’s tourism and gaming activity by encouraging some gamblers to postpone their visits.

However, casino executives cited by Seaport Research Partners said they had not seen evidence of significant pent-up demand from visitors who had delayed trips during the tournament.

Premium mass-market segment shows strength

Meanwhile, data from Citigroup pointed to continued strength among Macau’s premium mass-market players. The bank reported that spending in this segment increased in August despite a slight decline in the number of high-stakes gamblers it tracked.

Citigroup’s survey observed 31 so-called “whales,” who wagered an average of HKD244,000 per hand during August. That figure represented a 54% increase compared with August 2025, highlighting stronger spending levels among high-value players.
