(Macau).- Macau’s casinos have fully resumed operations after being forced to shut down for 33 hours due to Tropical Cyclone Ragasa, the strongest storm of the year.
Gambling operations restarted at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 25, as confirmed by an announcement in the official gazette signed by the Chief Executive.
Government Orders and Safety Measures
Authorities had ordered all casinos to close when a Typhoon Signal No. 8 was hoisted at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23. Employees were required to leave work two hours before the signal came into effect, ensuring safety ahead of the storm’s impact.
Typhoon Ragasa Breaks Multiple Records
According to the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, Ragasa set several records, including:
Longest No. 10 Signal Duration: 10.5 hours
First Year With Two No. 10 Signals Since 1968
Extreme Wind Speeds: Level 12 sustained winds for 10 minutes, with gusts reaching level 14
Prolonged Storm Conditions: Level 8 or higher winds for 15 consecutive hours
The storm also triggered a red storm surge warning, further disrupting transportation and city operations.
Why Typhoon Ragasa Was So Intense
Meteorologists explained that Ragasa underwent an eyewall replacement cycle, forming a rare “double-eyewall structure.” While the inner eyewall weakened and temporarily reduced the typhoon’s strength, the formation of a new outer eyewall caused the storm to re-intensify, leading to severe weather impacts across Macau despite the cyclone not making direct landfall.
