(Rockford).- After nearly half an hour of debate, city council members on Rockford’s code and regulation committee agreed to tax Hard Rock Casino Rockford for performances.

Rockford city council committee approves Hard Rock Casino amusement tax

“This is something that was negotiated into the agreement between the city and the Hard Rock some time ago,” says 14th Ward Alderperson Mark Bonne (D).

The amusement tax arrives as a 5% charge on those heading to Hard Rock concerts and entertainment outings.

Monday night’s approval of the tax ordinance focuses on the permanent location – joining other taxed “amusement” sites like the BMO Center and the Coronado Performing Arts Center.

“They wouldn’t be fair for ticket buyers at the Coronado and BMO to be paying a tax that you’re not paying if you’re to see a show at the Hard Rock,” says Ald. Bonne.

Although the fee is lower for potential athletic events, 3%, alderpersons point to the revenue supporting Rockford’s redevelopment fund – paying for local art and culture projects.

That redevelopment fund is now currently used for the ongoing maintenance of the Coronado Theater,” says Ald. Bonne, “which the city owns.”

Besides Coronado maintenance, funds benefit Embassy Suites, Millennium Fountain and Davis Park improvements.

The city council member also stressed creating a level playing field for the area’s entertainment – protecting downtown redevelopment and “fair” competition.

Monday’s committee approved the ordinance 5-0. The proposal moves to a city council-wide vote on July 8.

“The goal, obviously, is to have the ordinance approved before the casino opens,” says Ald. Bonne.

In response to the potential taxation, Hard Rock Casino Rockford President Geno Iafrate responded:

“We are aware and monitoring the situation and have no further comment at this time.”

Hard Rock’s permanent location welcomes visitors on August 29, with grand opening performances by Brad Paisley and Joan Jett.
