(South Korea).- While the gambling industry in the United States is still closed for the immediate future, South Korea has begun to reopen its casinos in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to GGRAsia, Paradise Co Ltd announced that it would reopen three of its four casinos at 6 a.m. Monday. South Korea’s gaming industry was suspended on March 24 for two weeks but was extended another while the country continued to contain the virus.
Paradise announced that it would reopen its properties in Seoul, Incheon and Busan. Its casino in Jeju reopened last week.
One of Paradise’s main competitors, Grand Korea Leisure Co Ltd, announced that it would extend the shutdown of its three properties until May 6. It’s important to note that both Paradise and Grand Korea run casinos that only foreigners are allowed to attend. It is against the law for native South Koreans to gamble at those locations.
Kangwon Land Inc, the owner of the only resort where locals can gamble, remains closed. It announced last Friday that it will reopen on May 4.
According to data from the Koreas Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were just 13 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed on Sunday. The country, which was at one point was one of the hardest hit by the outbreak, now has just 10,674 total cases of the disease, with just 236 deaths.
