(Queensland).- The NSW gaming regulator has upheld the suspension of Star Entertainment Group’s Sydney casino licence, extending the tenure of its special manager until mid-next year to ensure long-term structural reforms are embedded while the venue continues to operate.
Sydney Casino to Operate Under Extended Regulatory Oversight
Nick Weeks, the manager appointed by the regulator, will remain in his position until June 30 of next year. This extension allows the venue to keep its doors open and continue daily operations despite the official suspension of its licence.
Philip Crawford, Commissioner of the NSW Independent Casino Commission, acknowledged that while the casino has made notable progress, it still needs to prove that these reforms are deeply ingrained within the company's long-term corporate structure.
Queensland Grants Reprieve Following 2022 Systemic Failures
In a parallel move, the Queensland government has deferred the suspension of Star’s Gold Coast casino licence until March 31 of next year. This decision provides the embattled company with an additional six-month window to demonstrate that its turnaround strategy is firmly on track.
The ongoing uncertainty surrounding Star’s operational licences stems from a 2022 inquiry, which exposed severe systemic failures tied to money laundering within the organization.
