(La Paloma, Uruguay).- The national government has launched an international tender for the construction of a hotel with a luxury casino in the resort town of La Paloma, Rocha.

The government of Uruguay launched the tender for the construction of a luxury hotel-casino in La Paloma.

The Minister of Tourism, Tabaré Viera, announced that local or international bidders will be able to purchase the tender until Monday 23 October at a cost of 10,000 dollars, and that the expansion of envelopes will begin on Tuesday 24 October.

On 1 August, by means of a resolution, President Luis Lacalle Pou had authorised the international public tender for the sale of a piece of land valued at 6 million dollars, property of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP).

The sale is to be conditional on the construction and operation of the hotel-casino with a concession for the private exploitation of gambling for a period of 20 years.

The land consists of 27 hectares and 432 metres, and is located in the vicinity of the port of La Paloma, between the central part of the city and La Aguada. This area is categorised as "rural".

All natural or legal persons incorporated in the country or foreigners with a representative in Uruguay, who acquire the bidding documents and comply with the terms defined therein, may bid for the tender.

Rocha's coast is "a diamond in the rough", according to Tabaré Viera
"The diamond in the rough, which is the coast of Rocha, needs to be polished and that is what the departmental government and the Ministry of Tourism are working for as public policy makers," said Tabaré Viera. "The oceanic region of the country deserves it and needs it", he insisted.

In this line, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Remo Monzeglio, indicated that this is "the most ambitious project", and that it is not intended to compete with other hotels, but to "add clients, events, conventions and a casino room as attractions".
