(Barcelona).- WorldGaming, organiser of ICE and iGB Affiliate Barcelona, has updated its Good Neighbour policy to prohibit Meta Glasses and other wearable recording devices at its events, following concerns from exhibitors over privacy, intellectual property and the unauthorised copying of designs and features.
New restrictions on wearable recording devices
The updated policy states that Meta Glasses and other wearable devices capable of discreetly recording audio, video or images will not be permitted at the event.
According to the revised conditions, the measure is intended to protect the privacy and security of attendees, exhibitors and staff. Any photography, filming or recording must be carried out openly, in accordance with the event’s Code of Conduct and with the appropriate consent.
Growing adoption of smart-glasses bans
WorldGaming’s decision follows a broader trend among venues and live events introducing restrictions on smart glasses and similar technologies.
In August, UK pub chain JD Wetherspoon announced a ban on customers wearing smart glasses across its more than 800 venues, citing privacy concerns. Similar restrictions have also been introduced in theatres, restaurants, courts, airport security environments and military establishments.
Protecting intellectual property at gaming events
Margaret Dunn, Portfolio Director responsible for ICE and iGB Affiliate Barcelona, said exhibitors had contacted the organisers with concerns that their intellectual property could be compromised through the use of smart glasses.
She highlighted the importance of protecting investment in research and development and preventing copyright infringements that could affect businesses across the creative and technology sectors.
“ICE and iGB Affiliate Barcelona are at the intersection of where gaming meets technology and we need to protect and support the industry innovators in every way possible,” Dunn said.
Policy update ahead of the events
The organisers said the decision to amend the Good Neighbour policy reflects the need to prevent devices that can facilitate covert recording while maintaining a professional and privacy-conscious environment at the shows.
