(Johannesburgh).- As the African gaming and lotteries market experiences unprecedented growth, trust has become its most valuable currency. In a historic move to protect this integrity and foster transparency, the African Lotteries & Gaming Association (ALGA) is setting a new continental standard to resolve disputes and empower stakeholders.
A New Chapter for Accountability in Africa’s Gaming Industry
A significant milestone for accountability, transparency, and trust within Africa’s lotteries and gaming industry was unveiled at the ALGA CEOs Forum 2026 — The Black Table.
During her keynote address, the African Lotteries & Gaming Association (ALGA) Board Chairperson, Ms. Sebina Hlapolosa, officially announced ALGA’s intention to establish a continental Ombudsman.
This continental initiative represents a critical step toward strengthening the mechanisms through which concerns and disputes within the industry can be addressed fairly, independently, and impartially.
As Africa’s gaming and lotteries landscape continues to evolve and expand rapidly, the institutions and mechanisms that safeguard its credibility must also advance. ALGA recognizes that sustainable continental industry growth cannot be measured solely through innovation, investment, and market expansion. It must be equally supported by responsible governance, consumer confidence, and effective accountability.
Strengthening the Ecosystem Alongside Existing Regulators
The proposed Ombudsman will be firmly guided by the principles of accountability, fairness, impartiality, and institutional integrity. Importantly, this new entity is intended to work collaboratively alongside existing regulatory authorities and established structures across the continent.
Rather than replacing or duplicating the mandate of local regulators, the initiative seeks to contribute to a stronger overall ecosystem of accountability. The ultimate goal is to create an environment where all stakeholders have the utmost confidence that their concerns will be heard, disputes will be considered objectively, and the fundamental integrity of the industry will remain central to its continued growth.
The announcement reinforces a core message that emerged from The Black Table: the future of Africa’s gaming industry must be built collaboratively. Regulators, operators, industry bodies, and other stakeholders all play vital, interconnected roles in protecting the ecosystem.
Through the proposed Ombudsman, ALGA is ensuring that leadership remains accountable and institutions are strengthened. As the association highlighted during the forum, "Trust is currency - and it is a currency we intend to invest in." The Black Table has proven to be more than just a place for conversation; it is the starting point for real commitments toward a sustainable future in the African gaming sector.
