(Tallahassee).- The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) has officially recognized March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month, reinforcing its commitment to prevention, early intervention, and access to confidential support services for residents affected by compulsive gambling.

Florida Gaming Control Commission Marks Problem Gambling Awareness Month with Statewide Support Campaign

As part of the initiative, the regulator is spotlighting state-funded resources designed to assist individuals and families dealing with gambling-related harm.

State-Funded Helpline and 24/7 Assistance

Florida finances Playwise, a dedicated program that provides round-the-clock, confidential counseling, referrals, and support services. The platform operates a bilingual toll-free helpline at 833-PLAYWISE and offers additional tools and information through its website.

The FGCC emphasized that problem gambling impacts people across all demographics and that its consequences frequently extend beyond financial losses. Emotional distress, relationship breakdowns, employment instability, and broader social challenges are commonly associated with gambling disorders.

“Raising awareness is important,” said Alana Zimmer, Executive Director of the FGCC. “We must let people know that resources are available to help them when facing this issue. When individuals understand the warning signs of problem gambling and know where to find vital assistance, we help build a healthier and stronger Florida.”

Recognizing the Warning Signs

The Commission outlined several behavioral indicators that may signal problematic gambling activity, including:

  • Spending more time or money on gambling than originally intended
  • Concealing gambling habits from family or friends
  • Chasing losses or borrowing funds to continue gambling
  • Experiencing anxiety, irritability, or distress when not gambling

On March 10, the United States observes Gambling Disorder Screening Day, a national effort aligned with Problem Gambling Awareness Month. The FGCC is encouraging Floridians who believe they may be at risk to utilize screening tools and reach out for professional guidance through Playwise’s confidential services.

Regulatory Oversight and Enforcement

Beyond awareness efforts, the FGCC reiterated its broader regulatory mission: safeguarding the integrity of gaming operations across the state through licensing, compliance monitoring, criminal investigation, and enforcement actions.

In Florida, slot machines are legally permitted only in authorized gaming facilities. These include eight licensed pari-mutuel venues located in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, as well as certain properties operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Offering slot machines or other unauthorized gambling activities outside licensed facilities remains illegal under state law.

The Commission also encouraged the public to report suspected illegal gambling operations through its official reporting channels.

By pairing regulatory enforcement with public education and accessible treatment services, Florida authorities aim to strengthen responsible gaming standards while ensuring that support remains readily available to those in need.
