(The Hague).- The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has taken down 86 illegal iGaming websites that impersonated licensed operators through alternative domain extensions. The enforcement action targeted fraudulent platforms using the co.nl extension to mimic legitimate gambling URLs and redirect unsuspecting users to unlicensed services, as the regulator renewed the licences of eight established operators, including BetCity, Holland Casino Online, Kansino and Bet365.

KSA Targets Websites Impersonating Licensed Gambling Operators

The Dutch gambling regulator reported that illegal operators were “abusing” the co.nl domain extension to create copycat websites resembling those of authorised gambling companies. By imitating legitimate URLs, these platforms sought to mislead users and channel them towards illegal gambling services.

Working with the manager responsible for the co.nl extension, the KSA identified and disabled 26 additional clone websites within 48 hours. This latest operation brought the total number of neutralised copycat domains to 86.

The crackdown highlights the challenges regulators face in protecting consumers from illegal online gambling, particularly when unlicensed operators use domains designed to resemble those of regulated brands.

Eight Established Operators Renew Their Dutch Licences

The enforcement action coincides with the renewal of licences for all eight original operators that have remained active since the Dutch online gambling market was re-regulated. Among the major brands included in the renewals are BetCity, Holland Casino Online, Kansino and Bet365.

Maintaining a clear distinction between licensed operators and illegal platforms remains a key concern for the Dutch gambling market. Fraudulent websites that imitate authorised brands can undermine consumer trust and make it harder for players to identify whether a gambling service operates within the country's regulatory framework.

Dutch Gambling Advertising Debate Remains Relevant

The KSA's action also comes amid ongoing discussions about gambling advertising in the Netherlands. The country's House of Representatives recently rejected a proposal for a blanket ban on gambling advertising.

Industry stakeholders and the regulator have argued that legal marketing channels play a role in helping consumers distinguish licensed gambling operators from unregulated alternatives. From this perspective, restrictions on advertising must also be considered in relation to how consumers obtain information about authorised providers.

The latest enforcement operation reinforces the regulator's focus on tackling illegal iGaming activity and protecting the integrity of the regulated market. As licensed operators continue to operate under the Dutch framework, preventing fraudulent websites from impersonating their brands remains an important part of consumer protection and regulatory enforcement.
