Local residents amounted to 67pct of hotel occupancy in August

(Macau).- Local residents represented 67.4 per cent of the 184,000 hotel guests reported in Macau for August, according to information provided by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).
Overall the number of guests checked into hotels & guesthouses in August, represented an 85.5 per cent year-on-year decline, but a 25 per cent rise from July, with some 44,000 guests from mainland China and 11,000 Hong Kong.
The issuance of travel permits for Guangdong residents to visit Macau was resumed first for Zhuhai residents on August 12 and then to the whole province on August 26.
The number of available guest rooms dropped by 9.7 per cent year-on-year to 35,000 in August, with 117 hotels & guesthouses open for business.
The average occupancy rate of guest rooms stood at 13.3 per cent, a decline of 79.7 percentage points year-on-year.
In the first eight months of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms slid by 68.1 percentage points year-on-year to 23.5 per cent, with the number of guests of hotels & guesthouses tumbling by 77.0 per cent to some 2.16 million.
The issuance of individual tourist visas has been reinstated for the whole of Mainland China on September 23, however, no predictions were provided by local authorities have been made for the possible visitation numbers during the upcoming National Day golden week between October 1 and 8.
