Macau sees 50% increase in Suspicious Transaction Reports from gaming operators

(Macau).- The number of Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) issued by Macau’s casino operators grew by 49.5% in the first six months of 2021, according to statistics from the Financial Intelligence Office.
The total number of STRs from games of fortune in 1H21 was 693, up from 464 over the same period last year and comprising more than half of all STRS in Macau for the period at 53.8%. STRs from games of fortune had comprised 49.0% of the total in 1H20.
The total number of STRs received during the first half of 2021 was 1,288, up 36.0% from 947 due to increases in both the gaming and financial sectors.
Financial institutions and insurance companies reported 415 suspicious transactions compared with 332 in the prior year period, while suspicious transactions from other institutions increased from 151 to 180.
