(Panama).- "According to the numbers and calculations we have performed, we will need two years to recover," affirmed President of the Association of Games of Chance Administrators (ASAJA), Antonio Alfaro, about the games of chance industry in Panama.
According to Alfaro, Panama lost its attraction due to the income tax to gambling tables. "Because that player goes to Colombia, Costa Rica and the Caribbean; those countries have improved their casinos and gambling halls," he pointed. He said that those countries have achieved to obtain that tourism. "They have even come to Panama to hire our personnel."
He said that Panama has the capacity to recover that tourism, offering its visitors, its purchases and the beach. He talked about the possible elimination of the 5.5% of the income tax to the games of chance and bets in Panama, by the Gambling Control Committee.
Alfaro talked about the losses and the layoffs registered recently, in casinos and games of chance venues.
He added that, nowadays, a 56% of layoffs have been registered on the sector. "It has meant the loss of more than 800 jobs in table games, without counting our losses in other casino sectors, " Alfaro stated.
