Colombia Introduces New Gambling Tax in Context of Economic Emergency
In response to the crisis caused by intense rains impacting several regions of the country, the Colombian government announced a package of exceptional economic measures that include significant tax changes affecting various sectors, among them games of chance.
President Gustavo Petro signed a new decree under the declared economic emergency, aimed at securing resources to address the damages caused by the climate phenomenon, which has particularly affected departments such as Córdoba.
Among the most notable provisions is the creation of a new tax targeting the gambling industry, as well as the expansion of the wealth tax. These measures seek to strengthen the State’s fiscal capacity to respond immediately to the emergency and finance assistance, reconstruction, and mitigation efforts.
The Executive stated that the decrees are part of a set of urgent actions aimed at supporting affected populations while also seeking to ensure economic stability in a context of growing pressure on public finances.
The impact of these decisions on the gambling sector will be closely monitored by operators and industry stakeholders, who will need to adapt to a new regulatory and tax scenario amid an exceptional situation for the country.
