Delay on sportsbooks industry regulation reported in Puerto Rico

The government delay ro create a regulation for the sportsbooks, e-sports and fantasy league industry could represent a wasted opportunity for the country to obtain more collection. Representative of the Democratic Popular Party (PPD) Jesús Manuel Ortiz, said that the government  “neglect" the fact that the regulation process has not been concluded.

“Every minute that passes, every event is a wasted opportunity for a country that is searching for measures of economic development," the legislator declared, who pointed that the government does not project a sense of urgency to start this economic development proposal.

Last Tuesday, the Secretary of the Recreation and Sports Department, Adriana Sánchez Parés, confessed to Metro that the Gambling Commission has not concluded the regulation process in order to establish the regulation for these economic activities. Besides, Governor Wanda Vázquez said that the agency is working in order to finish its task, although the law that regulates those bets was signed last July.

Meanwhile, representative Néstor Alonso —author of the measure-questioned the reasons why the Gambling Commission has not complied. He critisized the little information that the Gambling Commission has presented since its creation, and the lack of knowledge regarding the regulation process and the operational phase of the government department.

Although the Gambling Commission has not regulated neither the sportsbooks industry not the fantasy league contests, the executive director, José Maymó, assured that there were no irregularities with the event held last weekend by FanDUel, the fantasy leagues company.

However, he indicated that they demanded additional information to the company as part of the investigation process, so they can verify that they acted according to the law.
