(Madrid).- The European Union launches an app linked to the digital ID card that will require validating the real age to access sensitive content, marking a before and after in privacy and control on the internet.

Europe Ends Partial Online Anonymity: Mandatory Age Verification with Digital Identity

The European Union is moving towards a more regulated internet with the launch of a mandatory age verification system that promises to put an end to so-called "fake adults" on the Internet. From now on, accessing certain content will require proving the real identity through an official application linked to the digital identity of each user.

The measure is part of the deployment of the European Union's Cybersecurity Law and responds to growing concerns about minors' access to inappropriate content, such as pornography, online gambling or uncontrolled social networks.

The system will be based on the European Digital Identity (eID), which will connect the app with official documents such as ID cards or passports. In some cases, biometric verification, such as facial recognition, will be incorporated to confirm that the person matches the document presented.

One of the key points is the use of "zero-knowledge" privacy technology, which will allow platforms to receive only a confirmation of age ("yes" or "no"), without accessing personal data such as name or date of birth.

Unlike current systems – based on simple easily manipulated checkboxes – the new model will be mandatory for large digital platforms and will have official or biometric validation, significantly raising security standards.

The impact will not be limited to Europe. Technology giants such as Meta, Google and TikTok could extend this type of control globally to comply with international regulations, which opens the door to its adoption in Latin American markets such as Argentina, Mexico or Chile.

The new system also raises a fundamental debate between security and privacy. While it seeks to protect minors and reduce risks associated with the digital environment – such as anonymity, unlimited access or exposure to sensitive content – it also implies a greater level of control over users' online activity.

Although the EU assures that a browsing history will not be stored, the model introduces for the first time a massive link between real identity and access to digital content, which for many marks the beginning of a new era in internet governance.

Looking ahead to 2026, the discussion is no longer just about the effectiveness of the system, but about how much users are willing to give up in terms of privacy in exchange for a safer digital environment.
