Nepal Orders Immediate Shutdown of Betting Apps and Websites Amid Regulatory Crackdown

The government of Nepal has ordered the immediate closure of all betting applications and websites, intensifying its regulatory crackdown on illegal gambling activities. The move aligns with the Cabinet’s 100-point governance reform agenda and was enforced within 24 hours by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Following a ministerial directive, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority worked in coordination with Internet Service Providers to block all identified betting platforms across the country.

According to Ministry spokesperson Uday Bahadur Ranamagar, engaging in or promoting betting — including advertising such activities — is strictly prohibited under the Muluki Criminal Code, 2074, and the Advertising (Regulation) Act.

Under current legal provisions, individuals involved in betting may face confiscation of illicit earnings, imprisonment of up to one year, and fines of up to 10,000 rupees.

The Ministry has issued a public warning against the use of unauthorized betting apps and websites and urged citizens to report any related activities. Authorities have directed the public to contact Nepal Telecommunications Authority Deputy Director Surya Prasad Lamichhane if they encounter illegal betting operations.
