(New Jersey).- Lawmakers want a 10% levy on online sports betting revenue tied to the FIFA World Cup, alongside temporary hotel, rideshare, and entertainment surcharges to help fund tournament expenses.
New Jersey lawmakers are advancing a new proposal that would introduce a temporary tax on sports betting activity linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the state prepares to host eight matches, including the tournament final at MetLife Stadium.
Assemblyman Michael Venezia has introduced Bill HB4838, which seeks to impose a 10% tax on net revenue generated from online sports wagers related to World Cup events. The measure would apply to licensed casinos and racetracks offering digital betting services across the state.
The proposed surcharge would cover all tournament-related wagers, including match results, multi-game betting markets, futures, and player performance props. Operators would be required to submit payments by August 10, 2026, with oversight handled by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.
The betting tax is part of a broader plan designed to help cover the significant public costs associated with hosting one of the world’s largest sporting events.
Additional World Cup Fees Planned Across Hospitality and Transport
Under the proposal, several temporary surcharges would also be introduced between June 12 and July 20, 2026 — the official World Cup hosting period.
Hotel stays across most New Jersey counties would face an extra 2.5% fee, while businesses located in the Meadowlands district would pay a 3% surcharge on food, beverages, and ticketed entertainment sales.
Ride-hailing trips to MetLife Stadium would also include a $0.50 fee per journey during the tournament.
Revenue generated from these temporary measures would be directed to the state’s General Fund to offset infrastructure, security, and operational expenses connected to hosting the World Cup.
The bill also includes a tax credit provision allowing New Jersey residents to claim reimbursement for tournament-related surcharges paid during the event.
Sports Betting Could Generate Millions in Additional Revenue
Industry analysts expect the 2026 FIFA World Cup to produce record sports betting activity across the United States.
According to projections from Vegas Insider, nationwide wagering volume could reach $3 billion during the tournament, significantly higher than the $1.8 billion recorded during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by the American Gaming Association.
As one of the largest regulated sports betting markets in the country, New Jersey is expected to account for roughly 8% of total national betting handle. Based on current forecasts, that would translate to approximately $240 million in World Cup wagers placed within the state.
With sportsbooks typically holding around 10% of betting revenue, operators could generate an estimated $24 million in taxable income from the tournament. Applying the proposed 10% surcharge would deliver roughly $2.4 million in additional revenue for New Jersey.
The legislation is currently awaiting review by state lawmakers. If approved, all temporary taxes and surcharges would expire after July 20, 2026.
