(Pennsylvania).- A Pennsylvania lawmaker has introduced a bill to keep gambling out of schools. State Rep. Jason Ortitay is pushing legislation that would use geofencing technology to block access to online gambling and sports betting on school grounds. The goal is to shield students from potential harms by ensuring gambling platforms can’t be reached within classroom settings.

New Pennsylvania Bill Targets Online Gambling Access in Schools

The proposal creates a digital barrier around schools

A Pennsylvania lawmaker is proposing legislation that would prevent online gambling and sports wagering from entering Pennsylvania classrooms via “geospatial technologies.”

The legislation, proposed by State Rep. Jason Ortitay, aims to protect students from the problems that can come from gambling by preventing them from accessing gambling while at school through a “geofence” around school property.

Online gambling has become popular in states across the country, particularly in Pennsylvania, where interactive gaming and sports wagering are authorized under a licensed and regulated framework.

Goal: Prevent students from engaging with gambling apps while on campus

However, that framework applies to those legally allowed to gamble, not Pennsylvania’s youth. According to Ortitay, students in Pennsylvania can sit in a classroom or stand on a playground and access online gambling and sports betting via smartphone or computer.

Ortitay cited one example from Allegheny County where a student began gambling and became addicted.

According to the memo, the legislation would “require interactive gaming and sports wagering certificate holders and operators to use geospatial technologies to prevent registered players from accessing online gaming and sports betting sites while on a school property.”

The legislation has not yet been submitted for introduction.
