Proposal to Increase Casino Taxes Emerges in Nevada Governor's Race

Tax Reform at the Center of Campaign

Washoe County Commission Chair Alexis Hill has called for higher taxes on Nevada's casino industry as part of her campaign for governor. Hill argues that casinos in Nevada benefit from one of the lowest gaming tax rates in the United States and should contribute a larger share to support public services and state programs.

According to Hill, her proposal is aimed at increasing revenue without placing additional tax burdens on Nevada residents. She has positioned the measure as part of a broader effort to reform the state's tax structure and require large corporations to pay more.

Democratic Primary Battle Intensifies

Hill is competing against Aaron Ford in the Democratic primary for governor. The winner will advance to the general election, where they are expected to face incumbent Republican Governor Joe Lombardo.

While Ford enters the race with strong institutional support, Hill has sought to distinguish herself through an aggressive tax reform platform focused on corporations, data center incentives, and gaming operators.

Gaming Industry Faces Renewed Tax Debate

The proposal has reignited a long-standing debate over the role of Nevada's gaming industry in funding state government. Casinos remain one of the state's most important economic sectors, and any effort to increase gaming taxes is likely to attract significant attention from operators, industry groups, and policymakers.

Hill maintains that Nevada can remain a competitive gaming destination while asking large corporations and casinos to contribute more toward public investments and essential services.

Election Ahead

Nevada voters will choose their party nominees during the June 2026 primary elections, with the gubernatorial election scheduled for November. The outcome could shape future discussions on gaming taxation and corporate tax policy in one of the world's most prominent gambling markets.
