(London).- From next season, no club will be able to display betting advertising on the front of its shirt, forcing half of the teams to look for new sponsors in a devalued market and with losses that could exceed 100 million euros per year.

The Premier League bans bookmakers on shirts and unleashes a million dollar sponsorship crisis

The Premier League enters a new commercial era with the ban on bookmaker advertising on the front of shirts, a measure that has a full impact on club finances. From next season, this restriction – voluntarily agreed by the teams in 2023 – eliminates one of the most lucrative revenues in English football.

The change directly affects ten of the twenty clubs that currently have main agreements with betting operators. Of these, the vast majority have not yet managed to close new sponsorship contracts capable of matching the amounts offered by the gaming sector, which generates a scenario of urgency in the offices.

The ban is limited, for now, to the main sponsor on the front of the shirt, allowing betting brands to follow sleeves, training clothes or advertising in stadiums. However, the loss of visibility drastically reduces the value of these deals.

Clubs such as Aston Villa, West Ham United, Fulham FC or Nottingham Forest – all outside the so-called "Big Six" – are some of the most exposed to this transformation, which could further widen the economic gap with giants such as Manchester City or Liverpool FC.

The economic impact is significant: it is estimated that clubs will lose about 100 million euros per year. In addition, the new sponsorship offers arrive with values up to 50% lower, reflecting how the exit of the bookmakers has deflated the market.

This shift also responds to the growing social and political pressure in the UK against the promotion of gambling, especially in sport. Although for now the measure is not a government imposition, the British government is considering extending the restrictions, which could further deepen the transformation of the football business model.

At the same time, a paradox arises: the EFL Championship has active agreements with bookmakers, which could attract investments that no longer have a place in the elite. This opens up an unequal scenario within the English football system itself.

Thus, the ban marks a turning point. The Premier League will have to reinvent its commercial ecosystem, exploring new industries to sustain its economic power without one of its strongest historical sponsors.
