(London).- Baroness Twycross has emphasized her commitment to supporting the licensed gambling sector, while warning against measures that could push players toward illegal operators. Her remarks come as the Gambling Commission delays its decision on controversial affordability checks.
Government’s Stance on Regulated Growth
The Gambling Minister, Baroness Twycross, told a Lords’ committee that she wants to see the regulated betting industry expand, even as concerns mount over affordability checks that could drive punters away from the regulated sector.
She stressed the importance of collaboration with the sector, advertising, social media platforms, and law enforcement to ensure players remain within the licensed, taxed, and regulated environment. “It’s a regulated licensed sector we would like to see grow,” she said. “We’ve done a lot of work to ensure we understand what measures we can take that will help us reduce illegal gambling.”
Balancing Harm Reduction and Market Expansion
The Baroness was asked whether the industry could grow while still reducing gambling harm. She responded that the government’s priority is to avoid pushing people from the regulated sector into illegal markets.
Talks have already taken place with the Gambling Commission, legal operators, social media platforms, and Police and Crime Commissioners.
She also expressed scepticism about the direct causal link between advertising and gambling harm, despite extensive research. “It’s currently hard, despite the plethora of research, to establish a very clear causal link which suggests that advertising does lead to increased levels of gambling-related harm,” she noted.
