(Gibraltar).- Executive Director and Chief of Regulation of the Games of Chance Division in Gibraltar, Andrew Lyman, has affirmed last Tuesday that gaming companies "will continue obtaining important benefits," after Brexit.
According to the Gibraltar Information Office, Andrew Lyman, although Brexit sets "challenges" for the gambling sector in Gibraltar, the number of companies authorized -around 30- "has not diminished."
"In fact, on the last 18 months, there have been new licensees, both on the B2C and B2B sector". Even after Brexit, Gibraltar will continue being an important online gambling center," he has said, and he has also underlined that "there are no signs that companies will leave after Brexit."
In this sense, Lyman has said that, in case a "hard Brexit" is produced, it could happen that the operators with venue in other countries of the EU-27 "cannot have access to the UK market".
"For the companies with venue in Gibraltar, however, this access to the British market is guaranteed," he affirmed.
Andrew Lyman considers that the closure of the border "is a remote possibilty" would also affect the rest of the economy. "It is expected that Spanish authorities do not want to impose economic misery to their own citizens, in a zone that already suffers high unemployment rates, for which Gibraltar existence supposes a 25% of its GDP. The decrease of the gaming industry in Gibraltar would be as bad for Spain as for Gibraltar," he has concluded.
