(West Virginia).- Although summertime generally sees a bit of a lull in the gambling industry, West Virginia is finishing the season strong. The month of July was a bit slow for West Virginia sports betting and online casinos, but August showed a big comeback.

West Virginia sports betting & iGaming markets see August improvement

Both the overall betting handle and revenue saw an increase from month to month, and you should expect those numbers to stay on the incline in the following months. Read on to learn about the jump in the West Virginia betting market.

West Virginia sports betting numbers up in August

The summertime slump for sports betting is to be expected. Because there’s no NHL, NBA, or NFL for the majority of the summer, and many potential bettors focus on vacation and travel over watching sports, total betting numbers tend to decline. However, West Virginia saw a bump from month to month as the calendar changed from July to August.

West Virginia saw a sports betting handle of $33.9 million throughout the month of August, a significant jump from July’s $25.01 million total. This marks a 35.7% jump, which could be attributed partially to the kickoff of the NFL preseason. Although the preseason isn’t nearly as popular as the regular season for wagering, plenty of bettors still back their favorite teams in the preseason. The mobile betting market was big in the Mountain State, with a $28.07 million mobile handle, up 33.5% from the previous month.

West Virginia sports betting revenue was also major, with the $4.03 million representing a 54% rise from July. It’s important to note that these statistics are reflected differently as West Virginia reports numbers weekly rather than monthly. Therefore, the August period is treated as July 31st through September 3rd.

With both the college and pro football seasons kicking off, you should expect the month of September to see a big betting handle as well. Although West Virginia doesn’t have its own NFL team, the West Virginia Mountaineers are popular in the area, as well as the Marshall Thundering Herd, a team coming off a major upset of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Online casinos see August increase as well

Sports betting wasn’t the only form of West Virginia gambling that saw a jump in August. West Virginia online casinos also got attention from residents, with a $327.6 million handle. This is another big improvement, with July seeing $277.3 million in online casino handle, representing an 18.2% increase. According to U.S. Top Casinos, West Virginia iGaming revenue also saw a jump, with nearly $11 million compared to July’s $8.5 million.

West Virginia has no shortage of online casinos and sportsbooks

If you’re of legal betting age in the state of West Virginia, you’ve got some choices when it comes to picking a new online casino or mobile sportsbook. Some of the most popular West Virginia online casino platforms include Caesars Casino Online, BetMGM Casino Online, FanDuel Casino Online, and DraftKings Casino Online. This makes it no surprise that each of those betting operators also offers their online sportsbook offerings, such as Caesars Sportsbook, BetMGM Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, and DraftKings Sportsbook.
