(Bogotá).- Businessman Jaime Vives Pinedo has been appointed as the new president of Coljuegos, the entity responsible for regulating and overseeing games of chance in Colombia. His arrival brings new challenges related to the fight against illegal gambling, operator oversight and strengthening the collection of revenues allocated to the healthcare system.
Vives Pinedo takes the helm at Coljuegos
Jaime Vives Pinedo will take charge of Coljuegos after building much of his career in the business sector of the Magdalena department.
The new official has participated in various business initiatives in the region and has been associated with Grupo Biocosta and the Chamber of Commerce of Santa Marta for Magdalena.
As president of Coljuegos, he will be responsible for leading a key institution in the operation and oversight of Colombia’s gaming industry, covering both land-based and digital forms of gambling.
Gambling market oversight and enforcement
One of the main responsibilities of the new administration will be to ensure that gambling activities operate within Colombia’s regulatory framework and that licensed operators comply with their respective obligations.
In this context, one of the key challenges will be to strengthen controls over unauthorized activities, particularly amid the growth of digital gambling and platforms operating outside the regulated system.
Market oversight is also essential to preserve fair competition among licensed operators and prevent illegal gambling from affecting the formal gaming ecosystem.
Illegal gambling remains a key challenge
The fight against illegal gambling in Colombia is expected to be one of the main priorities for Coljuegos under its new leadership.
The regulator will need to continue strengthening mechanisms to identify and control operations without authorization, while also enhancing oversight of a market that combines land-based establishments, sports betting and other digital forms of gambling.
The control of these activities also has a direct impact on public revenues, as licensed operators are required to pay exploitation rights established under Colombian legislation.
Protecting healthcare-related gaming revenues
Another challenge for Vives Pinedo will be ensuring the proper management and oversight of revenues generated by the regulated gaming industry.
Gaming exploitation rights are a source of funding for Colombia’s healthcare system. Therefore, stronger enforcement is aimed not only at bringing greater order to the market, but also at protecting the revenues that must be allocated to the purposes established by law.
In this regard, the new administration will need to continue monitoring operators’ compliance with their obligations and ensure that the revenues generated by gambling activities are effectively collected.
A mandate covering land-based and digital gambling
Jaime Vives Pinedo’s appointment comes as Colombia’s gaming industry continues to diversify its products and distribution channels.
Coljuegos will need to maintain oversight of land-based gambling while addressing the specific challenges associated with the digital environment, where controlling unauthorized operators and protecting users are particularly important.
The combination of legality, enforcement, the fight against illegal gambling and revenue protection will shape a significant part of the new president’s agenda at Coljuegos.
Another Magdalena businessman joins the national government
Vives Pinedo’s appointment also represents the arrival of another businessman from Magdalena to a strategic position within the national administration.
However, his main challenge will be managing an institution responsible for overseeing an industry that generates revenues for healthcare and requires ongoing regulatory and enforcement mechanisms.
With his arrival, Coljuegos begins a new phase in which strengthening market legality, monitoring authorized activities and combating illegal gambling will be central elements of its management.
