(Amsterdam).- The Netherlands Gambling Authority (Ksa) is cracking down on misleading .co.nl domain names featuring illegal gambling. The regulatory body is increasingly encountering fraudulent gambling sites that are clones of legal sites, using existing domain names but with a different extension.
Extension Leads to New Abuse
The co.nl extension was developed for websites of Dutch companies and is offered by the independent CO.NL operator. Unfortunately, illegal gambling operators are abusing this extension. They attempt to deceive consumers by recreating websites of licensed gambling operators and appending co.nl instead of .nl. Visitors are redirected from these fake sites to an illegal gambling website.
Operator Removes Fake Sites
Recently, the Ksa had successful actions taken against 26 websites with the misleading co.nl domain name removed. The CO.NL operator cooperated fully with this effort. After the Ksa informed the operator, the websites were taken offline within a maximum of 48 hours. Nearly all 26 websites were copies of license holders' websites.
Follow-up Action
During the investigation into websites with the .co.nl extension, the Ksa also encountered other illegal gambling sites. So far, 86 websites have been reported to .CO.NL and subsequently removed.
