(Macau).-The recommendation drew approval from lawmaker Angela Leong On Kei, also co-chair and executive director of SJM Holdings, who raised the possibility of linking its execution to non-gaming funds.
Lawmaker Leong Sun Iok has proposed extending the scope of casino membership points to benefit smaller businesses in Macau.
The lawmaker, who usually speaks for grass-roots workers in the chamber, urged the government to nudge casino operators towards allowing the use of coupons, vouchers, and complimentary points in local neighbourhoods to help tide SMEs over, Chinese-language Macao Daily News reported.
The recommendation drew approval from lawmaker Angela Leong On Kei, also co-chair and executive director of SJM Holdings, who raised the possibility of linking its execution to non-gaming funds.
In response, the Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong, expressed concern over the feasibility of the recommendation, saying that a “cautious evaluation” was necessary.
He explained that it could lead to “excessive promotion and advertising of gaming activity” among local communities – a prospect likely to result in negative implications contrary to responsible gaming policy.
He told legislators that the government should instead encourage closer cooperation with the SME sector in procurement and the provision of discounts.
It is not the first time that government intervention has been brought up when it comes to the dynamics of cooperation between SMEs and casino operators.
Not long ago, it was widely rumoured that the government had been forced to step in when a number of casino operators were criticised for being too generous in distributing food freebies to boost footfall.
