Louisiana’s 19 gaming facilities did their best to combine for $200 million in revenue in June but fell just short.
The state’s four racinos, 14 riverboat casinos and one land-based casino generated $197.4 million in revenue, down around 3.1% compared to May.
Key takeaways
- Louisiana casino revenue fell 3.1% from May to June.
- Harrah’s New Orleans dealt with a nearly $5 million monthly loss.
- Riverboat casinos managed to temper their losses, posting a 0.6% monthly drop.
- Louisiana online casinos could bring more than $50 million in monthly revenue.
Online casinos are a gold mine waiting to give millions to Louisiana
Louisiana and neighboring Mississippi share one thing in common: they’re both Gulf Coast states with a booming gaming market that has yet to legalize online casinos.
And like Mississippi, Louisiana casinos are missing out on a considerable amount of revenue because of it and, consequently, the state is losing out on tax revenue, too.
Based on Census Bureau data and revenue reports from the seven states with legal online casinos, PlayUSA believes Lousiana could’ve earned around $55.2 million in revenue in May.
Harrah’s New Orleans’ struggles cause revenue to drop
Harrah’s New Orleans, the state’s only land-based casino, saw its revenue fall 23.9% from nearly $20 million in May to $15.2 million in June. The property’s June struggles ultimately led to the state’s total casino revenue staying under $200 million in June.
Louisiana riverboat casinos hold steady in June
Many markets across the country dealt with noticeable month-on-month losses in June. However, riverboat casinos missed Louisiana’s May 2024 gaming revenue win by just 0.6%, falling less than $1 million to $153.9 million.
Treasure Chest New Orleans had a standout month, seeing its revenue rise 83.7% from $7.2 million to $13.3 million.
Racinos revenue falls 2.4% month-on-month
Like riveboat casinos, Louisiana’s racinos (horse tracks with casino gaming) managed to avoid big monthly losses in June. Revenue dipped 2.4%, dropping less than $700,000.
Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots managed to improve its monthly numbers by 3.8%, one of just six gaming facilities to do so last month.
