Swedish Gambling Authority Reports Decline in Market Channelization for 2024

(Stockholm).- The Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) has released its annual channelization assessment for 2024, revealing that Sweden’s licensed gambling market continues to face significant challenges.
According to the SGA, channelization – the percentage of players choosing licensed operators over unlicensed ones – now stands at 85%, down from 86% last year. This figure falls short of the Swedish government’s target of at least 90% for a sustainable gambling market.
This year’s assessment used fewer data sources, with H2 Gambling Capital excluded after it recently revised its own estimate for Sweden sharply downward from 91% to 72%.
Breaking down by verticals, betting – including horse racing – shows a strong channelization rate of 92-96%, while online casino remains the weakest link, with only 72-82% of players choosing licensed operators.
The SGA identified five key reasons why Swedish players turn to unlicensed sites, including a wider selection of games and the ability to bypass the national self-exclusion registry, Spelpaus.se.
Gustaf Hoffstedt, Secretary General of BOS (the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling), expressed concern over the findings: “The SGA confirms that online casino is Sweden’s biggest problem. Around a quarter of all online casino gambling takes place outside the licensed market, and this has been tolerated for five years without decisive regulatory action.”
Later this month, Marcus Isgren will present a proposal to expand the Gambling Act, aiming to criminalize almost all unlicensed gambling in Sweden. However, Hoffstedt warns that unless restrictive regulations – such as the total ban on bonuses and loyalty programs – are reconsidered, future channelization results may remain disappointing.
