(Douglas).- Synthetic identity fraud is becoming a growing threat for sportsbook operators, as organised fraudsters create convincing identities that can bypass traditional verification systems and exploit bonuses, payments and betting platforms.
How synthetic identities work
Unlike traditional identity theft, synthetic identity fraud combines genuine and fabricated personal information to create entirely new identities designed to pass routine KYC checks. Once registered, these accounts can appear legitimate until unusual betting, payment or promotional activity reveals potential links between them.
Why sportsbooks face challenges as attractive targets
Sportsbooks offer fast onboarding, high transaction volumes, multiple payment methods and promotional incentives, creating an attractive environment for organised fraud. Warning signs can include multiple accounts using the same devices or payment methods, linked IP addresses, similar betting patterns, repeated bonus claims and rapid deposits followed by withdrawals.
Detection requires multiple layers
Operators are increasingly combining risk-based KYC, device fingerprinting, behavioural biometrics, liveness detection, identity graph analysis, payment monitoring and machine-learning risk scoring to identify suspicious activity. Continuous monitoring is also becoming essential, rather than relying solely on verification during registration.
Building long-term trust
The rise of synthetic identity fraud is pushing sportsbooks to rethink customer verification as an ongoing process. By connecting identity, payment, behavioural and fraud data, operators can continuously assess risk while limiting friction for legitimate customers. In 2026, adaptability and the ability to respond quickly to emerging threats are becoming key components of sportsbook security and customer trust.
Ultimately, as fraud techniques continue to evolve, adaptability to cybersecurity threats While operators can update verification providers, detection rules and operational policies, the underlying sportsbook platform plays a key role in determining how quickly and effectively those changes can be implemented.
