SONAJA Expects World Cup Betting Surge

World Cup Fever Set to Boost Betting Activity

With the start of the World Cup season and growing interest in sports betting, the National Society of Games of Chance (SONAJA) expects historical trends to point to a significant increase in betting activity , both through online platforms and at physical betting shops and authorised gaming venues across Peru.

According to the association, global sporting events have traditionally driven higher consumption of sports prediction entertainment, fuelled by football excitement, the widespread adoption of digital platforms and increased attendance at land-based venues where fans gather to watch the matches.

Growth Expected Across Digital and Retail Channels

SONAJA explained that, alongside higher traffic on betting applications and mobile platforms, a rise in activity is also anticipated at physical locations, particularly during high-profile matches, decisive stages of the tournament and games involving fan-favourite national teams.

"The World Cup mobilises millions of fans and creates an environment of high participation across both digital and land-based channels. As a formal industry, we continue strengthening prevention, control and education mechanisms to promote a safe and responsible experience," said Fernando Calderón, President of SONAJA.

Promoting a Culture of Responsible Gambling

In light of this expected growth, the association called for stronger awareness around responsible gambling, reminding consumers that betting should be viewed as a form of entertainment rather than a source of income or a way to recover financial losses.

Among the key recommendations issued by SONAJA are:

Bet only through state-authorised and regulated platforms and establishments.

Set time and spending limits before playing.

Avoid betting under emotional pressure or attempting to recover losses.

Do not share betting accounts or allow access to minors.

Make use of self-exclusion and control tools if gambling-related problems arise.

A Highly Regulated Industry

SONAJA also highlighted that Peru's gaming sector is one of the country's most regulated and closely supervised industries, operating under strict legal, tax and labour standards. Both digital and land-based authorised operations are subject to ongoing inspections and monitoring by the relevant authorities.

The association further noted its close cooperation with organisations such as the General Directorate of Casino Games and Slot Machines, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) and the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and AFP (SBS), actively participating in international evaluations related to the prevention of money laundering and illicit financing.

Strengthening Consumer Protection During Peak Demand

SONAJA estimates that the weeks featuring the most intense football action will generate sustained growth in sports betting activity, particularly during rivalry matches and knockout stages. Against this backdrop, the association stressed the importance of enhancing the consumer experience while encouraging players to enjoy the World Cup responsibly.

"Today, Peru has a modern regulatory model that provides safeguards for both consumers and the State. The challenge now is to continue promoting formality and a culture of responsible entertainment across all operating channels," Calderón added.
